Assignment Objective
This assignment aims to investigate and test the student’s capabilities in understanding and applying the
main concepts of the Mechanical Product Innovation of an engineering product.
The Product Innovation Case Study

Product innovation is defined as the development of new products, changes in design of
established products, or use of new materials or components in the manufacture of
established products (“Product innovation”, n.d.).
Product innovation might be categories in many categories such:

  1. Introducing new product
  2. Enhancing quality and improving its overall performance for existing product
    This innovation will lead the product to become:
  3. More competitive compared to previous product
  4. More attractive compared to previous product
  5. Improved in the mechanical property
  6. Cost efficient-product (low cost)

Assignment Tasks
Student are require to do the feasibility study for any existing product. The task require you to
submit an exclusive report (90%) and oral presentation (10%).You need to find the new
innovation in term of its design and its materials. Both of this should improve the product
competitiveness and attractiveness compared to the previous product.
Furthermore, the new design and new materials are expected to improve in the mechanical
property and cost efficiency. (Low cost) In addition to this, the product should has the
commercial value and justification for further development.
The study should introduce the product along with its main function,function of individual part
and sub-assemblies, then you should explain the material history for the product, design
improvement, material improvement and the reasons behind this development at each stage.
The students must demonstrate their claim that the product has value and marketability.
This is a group assignment. You must make a group of three (3) person. For each member, you
are require to select any one from this topic:

  1. Design improvement (individual mark)
  2. Function of individual part/ sub-assemblies(individual mark)
  3. Material improvement(individual mark)
    Table 1 below show the details of mark distribution given to this assignment. Students are
    advice to ask for further explanation from the faculty member for any clarification.

Rules & Regulations:
 All resources should be cited using CU Harvard style.
 The final assignment must have a Title page, Table of Contents, References/ bibliography using
CU Harvard Style and page numbers.
 Title Page must have Assignment Name, Module name, Session, your name, ID, and the name of
the faculty.
 Softcopy in word format is to be submitted through Turnitin link on Moodle.
 Viva will be conducted after the assignment submission as per the dates informed earlier.
Guidelines:
 Assignment must be computer typed.
 Font – Times New Roman
 Font – Style – Regular
 Font – Size – 12
 Heading should be with Font Size 14, Bold, Capital and Underline.

 Explain with suitable diagrams wherever required. Diagrams must be drawn using suitable
software or by pencil.
 Each student has to do the assignment individually / Students have to do the assignment
collaboratively and each student should write a brief reflection on their contribution and learnings
from group work.
 You can refer books in E-Library or use internet resource. But you should not cut and paste
material from internet nor provide photocopied material from books. The assignment answers
should be in your own words after understanding the matter from the above resources.
